Expert Testimony
Forensic psychologists are often retained by attorneys to serve as the role of forensic expert witness. When working as an expert witnesses, forensic psychologists express opinions based on their specialized knowledge. As expert witnesses, forensic psychologists may base their testimony on information gathered solely for the purpose of testifying in the litigation, offer their opinion on the cause or consequences, interpret the action of other persons, draw conclusions of the basis of circumstances, comment on the likelihood of events, or state their beliefs regarding nonfactual issues.
Trial Consultation
Forensic psychologists retained as trial consultants often focus their work on helping attorneys develop an effective trial strategy, which includes creating focus groups to obtain feedback, receive input on exhibits, gauge the effectiveness of themes or witnesses, and test the impact of evidence
Work Product Review & Rebuttal Reports
Forensic psychologists can also be retained by an attorney to conduct a review of another psychologist’s expert report and evaluation procedures. This review includes the quality of the data analysis, how substantive issues are addressed, and if the opinions correspond to the underlying data.
